Biostratigraphy, Thermal Maturity, and Visual Kerogen Analysis of the Pan American Napatuk Creek No.1, Bethel Basin, Alaska - Abstract

The Pan American Napatuk Creek No. 1, which was drilled in 1961 near Bethel, penetrated 14,910 feet of sedimentary section. A brief summary of the diatom and palynological age determinations follows:

0-760 feet: Pleistocene
760-820 feet: Pliocene
820-1,240 feet: Early Pliocene
1,240-1,560 feet: Late Miocene to Early Pliocene
1,560-2,110 feet: Tertiary undifferentiated
2,110-2,300 feet: Middle Coniacian to Campanian
2,300-5,100 feet: Barremian to Turonian
5,100-14,910 feet: Indeterminate

The thermal history and visual kerogen analysis is as follows: the Quaternary/Tertiary section from 0 to 2,110 feet is thermally immature. This predominately claystone section contains organic material in the form of bark and woody debris and, to a lesser extent, non-fluorescing amorphous debris. This cellulosic organic matter would source gas if brought to thermal maturity. The Cretaceous, dominantly shale section from 2,110 to 5,100 feet is thermally mature. The dominant organic material is non-fluorescing amorphorous debris. The source character (gas prone versus oil prone) cannot be determined because the organics are thermally mature. The nondated section from 5,100 to 14,910 feet contains shale and sand units that are thermally overmature. Non-fluorescing organic matter and bark and woody debris dominate the type of organic matter present.
