A case study on CO2 production casing operations

ABSTRACT
This paper presents a case study on the innovative deployment of a production casing run, incorporating dual fibre optic (FO) cables on the exterior of the casing, secured with specialised clamps and centralisers, and protected with blast rods for future perforating. The integration of these cables required not only operational adjustments involving spoolers and sheaves but also a bespoke cement blend to ensure compatibility with the unique casing configuration. The cement formulation was specifically tailored for corrosion resistance as the well is expected to be exposed to carbon dioxide during a future injection. This was achieved using local additives that were both emissions-friendly and offered comparable performance to premium alternatives. Additionally, the use of premium threads required the use of a casing running tool, which proved to be an optimal choice over conventional casing tongs. This configuration minimised the operational footprint on the drill floor, reduced handling risks and streamlined operations, particularly given the added complexity of personnel and equipment managing the FO cables and clamps during the casing make up and running operations. The study underscores the value of tailored engineering solutions in complex well construction scenarios and highlights the effectiveness of specific tools and materials in optimising safety, performance and environmental impact. These insights are intended to advance the understanding of best practices in the industry for casing runs that involve complex

integration and corrosion-resistant cement blends.
