Title: Application of X-ray Crystal Analysis to a Problem of Petroleum Geology

The powder method of X-ray analysis of mineral mixtures has been applied to selected drill samples from several geological formations of some western Kansas oil wells. The diffraction patterns obtained were interpreted to show the individual minerals present, and the relative abundance of each, in the drill cuttings.

The data for wells rather widely separated geographically show a distinct correlation between the type X-ray diffraction pattern obtained and the member of the formation from which the sample was obtained.

A great possible usefulness of the method to petroleum geology is indicated.
