Title: Oil and Gas Developments in Kentucky in 1949

Author(s): E. Boyne Wood (2)

Abstract:

Increased drilling activity in Kentucky in 1949 failed to increase the total oil production. In spite of this, the ratio of successful wells to dry holes was much greater in 1949 than in the preceding year. Only eastern Kentucky showed an increase in oil production which totaled 8,853,311 barrels for the entire state. Most of the gas development took place in the Big Sandy gas field of eastern Kentucky.

Of the 34 new discoveries, all but one were made in western Kentucky. Several of these discoveries were outstanding.

A record number of "deep" wells were drilled and a large number of them were successful oil or gas wells in the St. Peter and Knox zones. The deeper drilling activity led to the establishing of two new drilling depth records in Kentucky.
