Title: Techniques in Photogeology

Author(s): Louis Desjardins (2)

Abstract:

Rapidly growing photogeologic science has potentialities greater than indicated by the level of most present literature. Requirements for advanced photogeology include a command of techniques to insure accuracy, and exceptional skills in handling of minutiae, besides field experience and photogrammetry. "Interpretation" and imagination at the beginning indicate a wrong approach; exclusively factual annotations provide the correct basis.

Preference is given to the lens stereoscope and ink annotations on the photos themselves, mounted for instant stereo viewing. Recognition of true horizontality and topographic contouring without control are required basic skills. A criterion for stratigraphic outcrop trends of poor expression is their lining-up in parallel planes. Projecting selected formational boundaries long distances is a late step. The best criterion for faults is multiple terminations of bedding. Parallelism of near-by faults helps locate poorly expressed ones. Straight lines or segments, rather than curved, are the rule for faults.

Floating dots and floating lines aid in tilt-free elevation measurement, with simple slide-rule formulas. Dips are readily measured by rapid means to great accuracy. Likewise stratigraphic columns of all bedding units having topographic expression are drawn to scale regardless of their structural attitude. Structural contours to a measured interval are drawn by greatly improved rapid means, and all these items are prepared with no control or field work needed.
