Author(s): Graham B. Moody (2)

Abstract:

Washington:
Three unsuccessful new-field wildcats; total footage 19,522 feet.

Oregon:
Four unsuccessful new-field wildcats; total footage 12,954 feet.

Nevada:
Two unsuccessful new-field wildcats; total footage 10,814 feet.

California:
Total exploratory footage in 489 exploratory wells completed as producers or abandoned as dry holes in 1950 was 1,911,924 feet. Comparable figures for 1949: 588 wells and 2,138,501 feet. Exploratory activity during 1950 decreased 16.8 per cent as to number of wells and 10.6 per cent as to footage from the record levels of 1949. Exploratory wells were 14.4 per cent and 16.8 per cent successful as to number and footage, respectively. The successful wells discovered 30 new pools and fields but none has given indication of being a major discovery. Production during the year was about 327,607,000 barrels of crude oil, 28,217,000 barrels of natural gas liquids and 532,396,000 MCF of gas (includes gas from dry-gas fields and residue gas from oil fields). Basement was reached by 65 unsuccessful ells. There were 67 exploratory wells active at the end of 1950.
