Abstract:
Theories originally advanced stated that decreases in the gravity of hydrocarbons found in the Gulf Coast were the result of increases in geologic age and depth of burial. Recent studies indicate that this is true only within limits, if at all. Changes from continental to shallow-water to marine conditions have an important effect on hydrocarbon gravities and may be the dominant factor. Average gravity figures in the Gulf Coast show significant variations from the original theory and illustrate the relationship between the occurrence of more marine conditions and higher-gravity hydrocarbons.
