Title: Seismograph Interpretation as Related to Changes in Sedimentary Section in West Texas and New Mexico

Author(s): John Daly (2), C. N. Page (3)

Abstract:

The different rock types which comprise the sedimentary series in the Permian basin of West Texas and New Mexico have characteristic seismic velocities. Within a time-stratigraphic unit this may vary by as much as 300 per cent. Parts of regional velocity maps which illustrate this fact are shown. These velocity maps constitute a method of expressing lithologic changes by numbers.

These sharp velocity contrasts can either emphasize or completely mask a geological condition favorable to the accumulation of oil. Interval time maps can be used to predict the lithology in areas not yet explored by drilling.
