Title: Significance of Temperature on Foraminifera from Deep Basins Off Southern California Coast

Author(s): Robert W. Crouch (2)

Abstract:

Cores from eleven deep basins and two additional cores from the open ocean, at depths corresponding with the deepest basins, have been taken off the southern California coast. Additional bottom samples have been examined. Temperature, oxygen content, and salinity were measured at depth in most of these basins. Four foraminiferal biozones based on temperature readings have been proposed. The physical and chemical conditions that existed in the Los Angeles Basin during Pliocene time have been partially reconstructed from these data.
