Title: Developments in West Coast Area in 1951

Washington:
One unsuccessful new-field wildcat which had interesting showing of oil; tota depth, 3,711 feet.

Oregon:
Three unsuccessful new-field wildcats; total drilling, 13,216 feet.

Nevada:
Five unsuccessful new-field wildcats; total drilling, 11,913 feet.

California:
Total exploratory footage in 577 exploratory wells finished in 1951 was 2,362,302 feet. Comparable figures for 1950: 489 wells and 1,911,924 feet. Activity was up from 1950 by 18 per cent as to number of wells and 23 per cent as to footage; greatest increase for new-field wildcats--332 wells and 1,416,300 feet, up from 1950 by 55 wells and 366,970 feet. Exploration was 14.2 and 16.0 per cent successful as to number of wells and footage, respectively; this is down slightly from 1950. Discovery record: 9 new fields and 21 new pools; none has given evidence of being a major discovery. Approximate production in 1951: crude oil, 354.6 million barrels, natural gas liquids, 29.5 million barrels; gas, 511.2 billion cubic feet (includes gas from dry-gas fields and residue gas from oil fields). Ba ement was reached by 54 unsuccessful exploratory wells. Sixty-five exploratory wells were active at the end of 1951.
