Title: Developments in Arizona, Western New Mexico, and Northern New Mexico in 1951

Author(s): Paul H. Umbach (2), Frank C. Barnes (3)

Abstract:

Two hundred and seventy-six wells were drilled in northern and western New Mexico in 1951. Fifty-three of these were wildcats, of which 30 per cent were productive. These are comparable with 109 wells drilled in 1950, of which 32 were wildcats. Thirty-one per cent of the wildcats were productive.

Arizona was limited to 5 wells, all dry-hole wildcats, compared with 7 drilled during 1950, which were also dry holes.

The 36,600,100 MCF of gas produced in northwestern New Mexico in 1951 more than doubled the 1950 figure of 14, 391,350 MCF. Oil production was also increased from 333,697 barrels to 391,930 barrels during 1951.

There are more oil fields due to new oil discoveries, but fewer gas pools due to merger of several gas pools into the Blanco trend. At the end of the year there were 7 gas pools and 9 oil fields compared with 9 gas pools and 7 oil fields in 1950.
