Abstract:
The Crow Creek member of the Pierre shale of Late Cretaceous age is a foot-thick layer of sandy siltstone and an overlying marl that is about 10 feet thick. The origin of this notably coarser and more calcareous unit in a formation that in central South Dakota consists almost wholly of shale and claystone is believed to be related to an uplifting and reworking of earlier Cretaceous sediments that had been deposited on the sea floor in the east-central part of the state.
