Title: Developments in East Texas in 1952

Author(s): R. W. Eaton (2)

Abstract:

Exploratory drilling in East Texas increased 17 per cent, compared with 1951.

Twenty discoveries were made, 10 less than the previous year, being 13 oil wells and 7 gas-condensate wells. These include 14 successful new-field wildcats, 6 long extensions, 3 deeper pools, and 3 shallower pools. The remainder of the 383 exploratory wells were dry holes.

The more important new fields continued the established trend toward increasing gas-condensate reserves. Most of the new-field oil discoveries were either fully developed, or partly outlined by dry holes at the end of the year, indicating disappointingly small reserves.

New producing strata were located at Fort Trinidad, Douglass, Pine Mills, West Waskom, Elysian fields, and Yantis fields.

Drilling operations in proved areas continued to decline in 1952. The East Texas field was the most active field, by a narrow margin. Total accumulated production for the district exceeded 4 billion barrels by the end of the year, with 73.04 per cent originating from the East Texas field.

Geophysical exploration continued to show the marked increase begun in 1951, and is expected to continue through 1953. Leasing activity continued at a high level during 1952, with approximately 1,942,000 acres purchased. The low average cost per acre reflects the continued interest in less densely drilled parts of the district.
