Title: Developments in Wyoming and Idaho in 1954

Author(s): W. E. West, Jr. (2)

Abstract:

There were 269 exploratory wells drilled in Wyoming in 1954 as compared with 260 in 1953. New-field wildcats numbered 190, a 30% increase over the 146 drilled in 1953. Total exploratory tests were 21.9% successful and new-field wildcats found 16 new oil fields and 5 new gas fields, making an 11% success ratio. Total footage drilled rose 15.3% to 1,462,944 feet and average depth per test well increased to 5,438 feet. Development drilling increased 32% and oil production reached an all-time high of 89,083,000 barrels. Five new-field discoveries and 6 new-pool--deeper-pool discoveries seem particularly significant. The 1954 discoveries will direct exploratory drilling to a wider part of the state's area during 1955.
