Title: Petroleum Developments in Middle East and Adjacent Countries in 1955

Author(s): W. E. Heater (2)

Abstract:

Petroleum production in the Middle East countries in 1955 totaled 1,183,951,800 barrels, an average of 3,243,700 barrels per day. This is the first time that the annual production exceeded one billion barrels; it is comparable with 998,804,700 barrels in 1954.

Production in India and Pakistan in 1955 was 4,594,000 barrels, an average of 12,590 barrels per day as compared with 11,460 barrels per day in 1954.

The Jambur field, in the northeastern part of Iraq, was put on production for export in December, 1955.

An apparently important oil discovery was made in the northern part of Kuwait where the wildcat well Raudhatain No. 1 was successfully completed at the depth of 10,301 feet. The first production of oil in Israel was obtained upon completion of the Heletz No. 1 test at the total depth of 4,969 feet. A gas reservoir which may be of considerable size was discovered at Uch, west of the Sui gas field, in West Pakistan.

Geological and/or geophysical work was carried out in varying degrees of intensity in the countries covered by this review except in Iran, Kuwait-Saudi Arabia Neutral Zone, Bahrain, Aden, Hadhramaut, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Cyprus.

Developments in Burma, which heretofore have been included in this paper, are included this year, and will henceforth be reported, in the review covering the Far East.
