Abstract:
Oil production in Indiana during 1956 totaled 11,777,000 bbls., an increase of 7.9% over 1955 production, and 699 wells were drilled for oil and gas, as compared with 668 in 1955, an increase of 4.6%.
Ten new pools, 13 extensions, and 10 new pays in producing areas were discovered in 1956.
As in previous years, most of the drilling took place in the southwestern part of the state, and most of the successful exploratory wells were completed in Mississippian formations. Three successful exploratory wells were completed in Pennsylvanian sandstones, 29 in Mississippian sandstones and limestone, and 1 in Devonian limestone.
Secondary-recovery methods contributed significantly to the increased production during the year.
