Abstract:
An intensive subsurface search characterized the exploratory effort during 1956. Improved logging devices and hydraulic-fracturing technique greatly assisted the successful completion of many wells. Geophysical activity declined, particularly in Texas.
Substantial additions to reserves were made by numerous fair to good discoveries, but only a few large discoveries and no great discoveries or "booms" were set off. Activity in frontier areas was limited.
The Central Basin platform continues to be the main producing geologic feature. Its mature state of development has substantially assisted the breaking of all yearly drilling and production records for this area (6,761 wells and 535,854,660 bbls. of oil).
