Abstract:
Drilling activity in South Texas in 1956 increased by 7.5% over the previous high in 1955. Wildcat drilling increased 15% and development drilling increased 5%. The discovery ratio was down 4% from the previous year with 94 discoveries. In all 2,310 wells of a total 4,303 wells drilled were completed as producers. Major reserve increases were from field extensions rather than new fields. An important discovery, the Kaye field in Wilson County, produced almost half a million barrels of oil since its discovery in February, 1956. Oil, gas, and casinghead gas production were up in 1956. Seismic activity and core drilling decreased while gravity exploration was up slightly.
