Title: Stereo-Structural Contouring

Author(s): Eugene M. Shearer (2)

Abstract:

Progress in the field of surface geologic mapping places new emphasis on the time-tested procedure of surface structural contouring. Application of air photographs and high-order or precision stereoscopic plotting instruments to the field of surface contour mapping results in a rapid, economic accumulation of data feasible to basinwide studies for oil exploration.

Stereo-structural contouring derives both vertical and horizontal control from measurements determined on the Kelsh plotter, a high-order plotting instrument. The Kelsh plotter produces a 3-dimensional model for stereoscopic inspection by the overhead projection of monochromatic light through a stereoscopic pair of glass diapositive plates, that is, positive film transparencies. Corrective and directive controls on the Kelsh plotter allow precise space orientation of the viewable stereoscopic model.

Areal geology, structural geology, strike and dip determination, section measurement, drainage delineation, and base-map construction are possible through use of the Kelsh plotter. Desired contour interval, the amount of available ground control and outcrop expression comprise the major controlling factors for a stereo-structural contour evaluation.

Accurate mapping, uniform density of vertical and horizontal control, moderate expense, reasonably rapid accumulation of data, and minimized logistical problems present some of the favorable facets of stereo-structural contouring.
