Title: Development in Illinois in 1957

Author(s): Alfred H. Bell, Virginia Kline

Abstract:

In Illinois 2,585 wells were drilled for oil and gas in 1957, as compared with 3,640 in 1956, a decrease of 29%. These figures are exclusive of water- or gas-input wells, salt-water disposal wells, and old wells worked over.

Exploratory drilling decreased 23% from 1,028 completions in 1956 to 788 in 1957. Sixteen new pools, 51 extensions, and 16 new pays in producing areas were discovered in 1957. Total oil production decreased from 82,314,000 bbls. in 1956 to 76,649,000 in 1957.

As in previous years, most of the 1957 discoveries were in Mississippian formations. One new pool produced from a Pennsylvanian sandstone, 11 from Mississippian sandstone and limestone, 3 from Devonian or Silurian limestone, and 1 from the Trenton limestone.
