Exploratory and development drilling activity was below that of 1961. 1,240 wells were drilled, or 57 less than in 1961.
Exploratory drilling totaled 322 wells, of which 13.3% were successful. There were 18 new fields discovered and 12 successful field extensions.
Geophysical activity totaled 1,442 crew-weeks, an increase of 518 crew-weeks from the previous year. Core drill activity totaled 11 crew-weeks, 32 less than in 1961. A soil-analysis survey, first initiated in 1962, recorded 6 crew-weeks.
The year's largest lease play centered in the northern half of Nacogdoches County and was initiated by activity in Trawick field.
