The total of all exploratory wells drilled in North America in 1963 was 11,916. The total footage was 59,923,463. Comparable totals for 1962 were 11,784 wells and 58,988,021 feet. Totals by countries for 1963 were 1,153 wells and 5,622,120 feet for Canada; 99 wells and 815,881 feet for Mexico; and 10,664 wells and 53,485,462 feet for U.S.A. as compared with 1962 totals of 856 wells and 4,248,676 feet, Canada; 131 wells and 1,123,457 feet, Mexico; and 10,797 wells and 53,615,888 feet, U.S.A.
A total of 2,373 wells, or 19.9 per cent of all exploratory holes drilled in the three countries, were found capable of producing some hydrocarbons, i.e., about one in five. The remaining 9,543 wells, or 80.1 per cent, were "unsuccessful."
