Title: Petroleum Developments in Mexico in 1963

Author(s): Federico Mina Uhink (2)

Abstract:

Five hundred and fifty-four wells were drilled in Mexico in 1963 as compared with 639 drilled during 1962, a decrease of 13.4%. The 455 development wells drilled in 1963 (a decrease of 10.1% from 1962) resulted in 290 oil wells and 52 gas wells for a success percentage of 75.2%. Fifty-three new-field wildcats were drilled in 1963, a decrease of 31.2% from 1962. The discovery ratio is 1: 6.6, somewhat lower than the success ratio of 1:4.3 for 1962. High-light of 1962 was the offshore drilling of the extension of the Golden Lane under the continental platform, which found the El Abra reef limestone of Middle Cretaceous age oil productive.

Exploration activities: 13 surface geological parties, 16 seismic crews, 4 gravity-meter parties, 1 magnetometer party. Total: 34 exploratory crews. (Compared with 34 operated during 1962.)

Annual production: 125,829,456 bbls. of oil for an increase of 4,266,249 bbls. over 1962.

Gas production: 401,515,284 MCF for an increase of 30,207,340 MCF gas.

Reserves: Proved reserves of oil and gas equivalent as of Jan. 1, 1964: 5,149 million bbls.

Drilling activities: wells drilled: 554, exploratory holes: 99, new-field wildcats: 53, new oil and gas field discoveries: 8 (4 of these may be non-commercial). Total footage during 1963: 4,603,998, average depth in new-field wildcats: 8,655 ft.

Discovery methods: 5 new-fields by seismology, 1 new-field by surface geology, 2 new-fields by subsurface geology and seismology.
