Title: Developments in Eastern Canada in 1966

Author(s): J. E. S. Milne (2), R. D. Howie (3)

Abstract:

Oil production in 1966 in Eastern Canada set a new record of 1,330,574 bbls. while annual gas production increased to an estimated 14,900 MMcf. During the year a pipeline was completed from the Pointe-du-Lac shallow drift gas field to Three Rivers, Quebec.

In most of the sedimentary areas of Eastern Canada industrial exploration and development activity continued to decline.

Development drilling decreased from 109 wells in 1965 to 62 in 1966. These wells were drilled for gas in the Silurian of southwestern Ontario.

Sixty-six exploratory tests were drilled in southwestern Ontario compared with 84 in 1965. Of these, 4 were completed as oil discoveries, and 4 as gas discoveries. A total of 40ΒΌ crew-months of geological and geophysical work was completed compared with 72 crew-months and 1,600 mi. of magnetic surveys in 1965.

Principal interest in Eastern Canada was focused on the offshore prospects. Offshore holdings increased from 113,969,453 acres in 1965 to 169,543,939 acres in 1966. Eight crew-months of geophysical work was carried out. One well was completed as a dry hole on the continental shelf approximately 150 mi. southeast of Newfoundland, and another hole, about 100 mi. off the coast was begun.

In 1967 it is anticipated that activities in Eastern Canada will be on the same scale as in 1966.
