Title: Carbon Isotope Composition of Natural Methane Occurrences: GEOLOGICAL NOTES

Author(s): William M. Sackett (2)

Abstract:

Decreasing time, temperature, and bond strengths result in an enrichment of C12 in methane produced by experimental thermal cracking of naturally occurring organic materials. Similar C12 enrichments with decreasing reservoir depths are shown by published analyses on the isotopic composition of natural methane occurrences. Conditions at formation seem to be more important than migration or bacterial versus chemical processes in determining natural variations.
