Title: Gas-show Pattern at Mcmullin Ranch Field, Sacramento Valley, California

Author(s): Raymond L. Knight (2)

Abstract:

Ditch-gas readings have been sampled through two Upper Cretaceous Previous HitsandstoneNext Hit zones in 19 wells within and near the McMullin Ranch field in order to define the gas-show pattern associated with a California (Sacramento Valley) dry-gas field. Contour maps of the ditch-gas means for each zone show that the Blewett "5" and upper Tracy Previous HitsandstoneNext Hit iso-gas-show lines have essentially the same configuration as the structural geometry of the trapping anticlinal fold.

This study indicates that an exploratory well could be drilled close to a gas accumulation without detecting the accumulation. At McMullin Ranch (50 billion cu ft gas reserve) the zero gas line is perhaps only 1,000 ft Previous HitfromNext Hit the gas-water contact of the field. Drilling distribution, mud properties, and penetration rates are considered in relation to the gas-show pattern and are tabulated for comparative purposes.
