Title: Newly Discovered Diapirs in Gulf of Mexico

Author(s): J. Lamar Worzel (2), Robert Leyden (2), Maurice Ewing (2)

Abstract:

New geophysical data are presented from recent surveys in the Sigsbee Deep and Bay of Campeche. Reflection-profiler records are shown which indicate the existence of a zone of structures of diapiric appearance extending continuously from the Sigsbee Deep to within 75 mi of the Tabasco-Campeche Saline basin. The locations of 36 buried features termed "domes" and of 124 emergent features termed "knolls" are plotted, combining previous work with the new surveys. Associated geophysical evidence, in agreement with previous findings, rules out an igneous origin for the diapiric features. The combined geophysical evidence and proximity to known salt domes in Mexico support the hypothesis that the diapiric features are of salt origin.
