Title: Geothermics in North America: Present and Future: ABSTRACT

Author(s): Henry S. Birdseye

Article Type: Meeting abstract

Abstract:

Geothermal energy is emerging as a substantial source of low-cost electrical power at certain localities throughout the world. Geothermal anomalies are known in every country of North and Central America, with the possible exception of Honduras.

The most prominent geothermal districts in each country are described, with stress on the controlling geological factors. Those localities already under commercial development in the United States, Mexico, and El Salvador are reviewed.

An effort is made to foresee the future exploitation of hitherto noncommercial occurrences, and the writer describes exploration and development techniques which should prove to be fruitful in the future.
