Abstract:
Champlainian rocks in the upper Mississippi Valley area consist of two major units, one predominantly clastic and the other predominantly carbonate. The clastic unit has been named the Ancell Group and the term "Ottawa Megagroup" has been used to designate the carbonate unit. The two units are connected through the Glenwood Formation which is a sequence of transitional beds assigned to the top of the Ancell Group.
In the present study the Glenwood Formation in southwestern Wisconsin is examined critically and the upper boundary is redefined to coincide with the base of the Chana Member of the Pecatonica Formation; use of the term "Ottawa Megagroup" is questioned; the name Ancell Group is retained for the clastic unit; and the name Sinnipee Group is proposed for the carbonate unit which is above the Glenwood Formation and below the Maquoketa Shale.
