Abstract:
During 1968, there was a net increase in acreage held in North Africa with governments of the host countries taking interests in a majority of the new rights--a trend which is expected to continue. Exploration dropped in the year to a total of about 589 crew-months. A total of 16 oil and 3 gas discoveries was made and 2 other wells active at year end had found oil shows--in the western part of Egypt and 1 offshore of Morocco. They may turn out to be the most significant discoveries of the year.
Development and extension drilling increased in 1968 with 258 wells completed and 2,113,180 ft drilled; the success was 83.3%. At year end, 47 rigs were active in North Africa.
Oil production in 1968 average 3,740,700 b/d, up 37.3% from the previous year. By March 1969, output had reached 4,200,000 b/d.
