Title: Geophysical Reconnaissance on African Shelf: I. Cape Town to East London

Author(s): R. Leyden (2), M. Ewing (2), E. S. W. Simpson (3)

Abstract:

The results of 17 sonobuoy profiles recorded along the seaward edge of the South African shelf, from near Cape Town to south of East London, are presented with magnetics and gravity recorded en route. The results of previously reported explosion seismic refraction profiles and geologic mapping of the shelf and upper slope between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth were used in an attempt to correlate the seismic horizons observed with the known geologic section. The section reported follows the shelf edge in order to identify possible offshore embayments. On the flanks of the Agulhas arch high-velocity sediments and basement appear to be shallow. Along the central part of the section, 3-4 km of sediments show increasing velocities with depth. At the eastern end, near East Londo , velocities of 4.4-4.8 km/sec also were observed at quite shallow depths.
