Title: Developments in West Coast Area in 1970

Author(s): J. W. Higgins (2)

Abstract:

Exploration in Washington increased, but the level of future activity is contingent largely on the political climate and pending legislation. In Oregon, exploration remained at a very low level, but is likely to increase in 1971. In California exploration continued to decline, with exploratory drilling reaching the level of the early years of World War II. Overall, exploratory drilling was more successful in 1969, partly because of a shift from higher risk to lower risk ventures. One major oil-field discovery was reported on an OCS lease in the Santa Barbara Channel. Several new pools were discovered, both oil and gas. Although development drilling decreased slightly, the average IP rate was down sharply, and oil production declined. The decline in production is likely to accelerate unless recently discovered offshore fields can be developed rapidly.
