Abstract:
Urano-organic samples representing several uranium deposits in the Colorado Plateau and elsewhere (Temple Mountain, Ambrosia Lake, La Bajada, Gallup, South Dakota, Wyoming, and South Africa) were studied through infrared spectroscopy and organic elemental analysis. The data obtained were compared with similar data on reference samples of coal and petroleum derivatives commonly associated with such deposits. The comparative analysis indicates that decayed vegetation (or coal) is the main source of the organic matter in all the major urano-organic deposits; petroleum is shown to be the main source in the relatively minor La Bajada deposit. This conclusion is generally supported by other evidence (both geochemical and geologic) available in the literature.
