Abstract:
Methods developed and currently applied in paleocurrent analysis appear to be vitiated by a considerable source of error--researchers disregard the volume of the measured sedimentary units. The writer proposes introduction of a "volume factor" in the computations in order to avoid such a source of error. The volume factor is computed by giving each measurement a value equal to the volume of the sedimentary unit it represents. The importance of the statistical bias originated by disregarding the volume can be observed in an example of fluvial crossbedded sands.
