Western Canada recorded increased exploratory and development drilling during 1972, compared with 1971. There were 3,472 wildcat and development wells, an increase of 609 wells (21.2%) from 1971. Exploratory wells totaled 1,614 wells, up 14%, and exploratory success increased 1.4% from the previous year. Exploratory abandonments increased 11.6% to 1,093 wells, and exploratory footage was up 15.7% compared with 1971.
Exploratory oil discoveries declined to 115 wells, down 24.8%, whereas 406 gas completions represented an increase of 43.5% from 1971.
Development drilling totaled 1,858 wells, an increase of 28.3% compared with 1971. Successful completions were 81.3% of wells drilled.
In the Arctic Islands, Panarctic recorded exploratory gas successes at Kristoffer Bay G-06 and Hecla F-62 wildcats, and indicated an oil discovery at Thor P-38.
Gulf made a gas-condensate discovery at the Parsons Lake wildcat in the Inuvik area.
Important exploratory gas successes were recorded in the Fir and Teepee Creek areas of Alberta, and at Stony Creek anticline in the northeast British Columbia fold belt.
