Author(s): K. L. Mohl (2), L. B. Henderson (3), G. C. Crews (4), H. T. Ashmore (5)

Abstract:

Both exploratory and development drilling increased during 1972 in the Northern Rockies. A total of 1,857 wells was completed, of which 455 were oil, 178 were gas, and 1,224 were dry. Wyoming led the region in the number of successful oil completions; Montana was first in gas completions.

Exploratory completions in the 4-state region in 1972 were 994, an increase of 27.4% from 1971. Of the 994 exploratory tests, 67 were completed as oil discoveries, 46 as gas discoveries, and 881 were dry holes. Overall success percentage in exploratory drilling in 1972 increased 2% from 1971 (11.4% contrasted to 9.4%) with Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota exhibiting improvement in this category.

Development drilling increased 17.5% in 1972, but the development success declined to 60.3% compared with 68.8 in 1971. Montana and South Dakota improved in this category, but Wyoming and North Dakota declined.

All indications point to 1973 as a good year for exploratory activity in the Northern Rockies. Gas exploration has been particularly stimulated due to the great incentive resulting from increased wellhead prices.
