Abstract:
The Cambridge arch and the Chadron arch are parts of a structural system which crosses Nebraska in a northwesterly direction. Computer-plotted data on the Paleozoic-Mesozoic sequence indicate that variations in the stratigraphic thickness of individual units have been created by erosion, nondeposition, and thickening related to the trend of the structural system, but collectively the sedimentary sequence is of similar thickness throughout. This uniform thickness is caused by areas of erosion and nondeposition subsequently becoming sites of thicker deposition. The weak Paleozoic and Mesozoic erosional and depositional trends coincide in position with strong pre-Tertiary arching, and probably indicate that the system parallels a zone of weakness within the Precambrian basem nt. The pre-Tertiary arching differs from earlier events in that there is no compensating deposition on sites of earlier stratigraphic thinning.
