Abstract:
Study of maps and samples, compiled and collected by geologists of the Atlantic Refining Co. during their survey of Haiti about 1940, permits new interpretations of age and facies relations of previously established formations, generally resulting in younger age determinations. In early Miocene time carbonate and clastic sediments ("Arc formation") were laid down in shallow water on the northeast edge of what is now the Central Plain; farther south and west deep-water sediments, containing little clastic material (Madame Joie Formation) were deposited. During middle Miocene time the sea regressed southwestward, resulting in the deposition of clay, sand, and conglomerate of mudflat, lagoonal, or continental origin in the north (Las Cahobas Formation) and of deeper water se iments with increasing clastic content (Thomonde Formation) in the south. In late Miocene time the Las Cahobas Formation extended over the whole Central Plain region and the lower Artibonite Valley, with the exception of the area south of the mouth of the river (St. Marc area), where shallow marine conditions persisted into the Pliocene.
