Abstract:
Sandy, crossbedded continental sedimentary rocks, known in Sudan as the Nubian Sandstone Formation, cover a large part of Sudan and adjacent Egypt, Libya, and Chad. The sediments were deposited across a broad plain under aqueous conditions mainly during the Cretaceous. The present irregular outcrop pattern is the result of an originally uneven basement surface, faulting and minor warping, and subsequent erosion. The source area for the sediments in an area 700 km northwest-southeast by 1,200 km southwest-northeast was persistently south to southeast.
