Title: Petroleum-Bearing Formations in Northeastern Syria and Northern Iraq

Author(s): M. Hamed Metwalli (2), G. Philip (2), M. M. Moussly (3)

Abstract:

The subsurface Tertiary and Mesozoic formations in the Jebissa area of northeastern Syria are correlative with those in northern Iraq. Formations older than Mesozoic have not been penetrated fully. Lithostratigraphic variations can be correlated with their equivalents in northern Iraq. The tectonic movements which affected the Jebissa area are believed to be the same that affected northern Iraq and the Arabian basin in general.

The generation and accumulation of petroleum in the Tertiary and Mesozoic formations of northeastern Syria differ from those in northern Iraq as to source rocks and mode of migration.
