Title: Transformation of Resistivity to Pseudovelocity Logs

Author(s): Albert J. Rudman (2), Joseph F. Whaley (3), Robert F. Blakely (3), Maurice E. Biggs (3)

Abstract:

In many areas there are few or no continuous velocity logs (CVL) and an abundance of short-normal resistivity logs. A relation developed by D. Y. Kim, called the "scale function," equates pseudotransit times TT^prime and the apparent resistivity Ra: TT^prime = A + (B)Ra<fr>-1</>C</fr> and provides a means of extending knowledge of seismic velocities. By using five selected wells, average scale function constants (A, B, C) have been empirically established for Indiana and pseudotransit times calculated for several deep wells. Cumulative travel times to key horizons compare within 10 percent of times calculated from CVLs. Plots of CVLs and pseudologs also compare favorably in overall form. A principal source of error is rel ted to anomalous drilling mud resistivities.
