Abstract:
Granite from a basement test well in north-central Mississippi has an age of 790 m.y. according to K/Ar dating of a whole sample of well cuttings. The granite consists primarily of microperthite, orthoclase, and quartz with small amounts of other minerals including oligoclase, hornblende, aegirine-augite, and chlorite. The granite may be metamorphosed and therefore its age is probably older than the stated 790 m.y. This granite penetration is important because it indicates that Precambrian rocks are present under the Gulf coastal plain province of north-central Mississippi.
