Title: Radiometric Age Determination of Silurian Glauconite: DISCUSSION

Author(s): D. G. Brookins (2)

Abstract:

A calculated 426-m.y. K-Ar date on glauconite has been reported for the basal section of Niagaran (Silurian) rocks from Hamilton, Ontario. This date was derived by assuming a 10-percent radiogenic 40Ar loss for the measured date of 384 ± 11 m.y. The 426-m.y. calculated date is given without error limits and, further, the assumed "10-percent" loss is open to question. Regardless of the uncertainties about the true radiometric date no one should attempt rigorous geochronologic, time-scale-applicable interpretation based on one sample.
