Author(s): Bruce A. Heise, Roger V. Amato (2)

Abstract:

The year 1979 was the second for exploratory drilling on the U.S. Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Eighteen exploratory wells and the COST B-3 well were completed for a total of 250,038 ft (76,212 m) of drilling; 14 of these were located offshore New Jersey in the Baltimore Canyon Trough; the remaining 5 were drilled offshore Georgia in the Southeast Georgia Embayment. No exploratory wells for oil and gas were drilled onshore in 1979. Operators of 3 wells reported significant shows in the Baltimore Canyon; the remaining wells were reported as dry holes. OCS Lease Sale 42 drew bids on 73 tracts for a total of $827,632,188 in the Georges Bank basin. Geophysical activity totaled 3,246 line-mi (5,223 km) in 19.3 crew-weeks.
