Title: Oil and Gas Developments in Louisiana Gulf Coast Offshore in 1981

Abstract:

In offshore Louisiana in 1981, 984 wells were drilled, an increase of 65 from 1980. The overall success rate increased 0.9% from 1980; 26 more wildcats were drilled, with an increase in success rate of 4.3% (to 23.9%). Exploratory drilling decreased from 97 wells in 1980 to 90 wells in 1981. The success rate increased 5.5% (to 62.2%), with 56 new-pool and outpost discoveries.

In Federal OCS Sale A66, held July 21, 1981, 91 tracts, encompassing 441,251 acres, in offshore Louisiana were leased for bonuses totaling $1.527 billion. In Federal OCS Sale 66, held October 20, 1981, 82 offshore Louisiana tracts, encompassing 393,088 acres, were leased for bonuses totaling $1.242 billion.

Geophysical activity increased from 826.5 crew-weeks reported in 1980 to a record 1,199.5 crew-weeks in 1981.
