Abstract:
In 1982, exploration and development drilling set a new record for Australia, breaking the previous record set in 1965. In 1982, there were 149 exploratory wells and 149 development wells. The states with the greatest drilling activity (both exploration and development) were Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia. The Cooper basin in South Australia was the principal area of new discoveries.
Significant extension and outpost drilling proved the commercial significance of Jackson field (Mesozoic) in southwest Queensland. A pipeline is planned from Jackson across southern Queensland to Moonie field in the Surat basin.
Geophysical activity was nearly the same in Australia in 1982 as it was in 1981. Onshore, about 59,781 km were surveyed; offshore, 46,981 km were surveyed.
Natural gas production increased 4.5% in 1982 compared with 1981, to 12,528 million m3. Oil production in 1982 decreased by 11,189,151 m3 (5.2%) to 21,584,172 m3, an average daily production of about 371,957 bbl.
