A newly developed technique automatically measures the relative content and distribution of minerals in rock samples. This technique uses a computer-controlled scanning electron microscope in combination with an energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometer. Information about the particle sizes for the different minerals and a graphical description of their locations in the rock becomes available.
