Drilling in the northern Rockies had a dramatic decline in 1983, with 2,546 wells completed compared to 4,136 wells completed in 1982. Exploratory drilling resulted in 203 successes, 153 of which were oil and 50 gas. Development drilling resulted in 1,282 successes and 372 dry holes.
As a result of the first decline in 7 years, drilling in the northern Rockies in 1983 was at 1977 levels.
