Title: Oil and Gas Developments in Eastern and Northwestern Colorado in 1985

Author(s): Linda M. Glenister, Lawrence D. Ligrani (2)

Abstract:

Drilling activity in eastern and northwestern Colorado was at record levels in 1985, with 1,918 wells drilled in the area. This represents a 21% increase in drilling from 1984's 1,589 wells. One-third of the total, or 644 wells, were exploration tests with a success rate of 29%, up from the 24% success rate in 1984.

Activity in eastern Colorado focused on Pennsylvanian rocks along the Las Animas arch and Cretaceous formations in the Denver basin, especially in the Greeley area. Limited activity was also seen in the deeper zones in the Denver basin, in Tertiary and Cretaceous sediments of the Raton basin, and in subvolcanic rocks in the San Luis basin area.
