Author(s): Harry S. Forsthoff, J. Jeffrey Kersting (2)

Abstract:

In 1985 offshore Louisiana, 974 wells were drilled, a decrease of 171 wells from 1984. The overall success rate was 56.2%, a decrease from the 63.9% success rate of 1984. With 40 discoveries, down from 65 in 1984, the success rate for new-field wildcats decreased to 22.2%. New-pool and outpost drilling increased by 51 wells over 1984 levels to 108 wells drilled. Of these, 51 discoveries were made, compared to 34 in 1984.

At Federal Lease Sale 98 on May 22, 1985, $986.56 million was bid on 415 leases by 74 companies. The total of accepted winning bids on 380 tracts (1.96 million ac) was $918.50 million.

Geophysical activity fell 14.8% from 1984 levels to 965 crew-weeks. Liquids and gas production also decreased 9.1% (to 327 million bbl) and 15.3% (to 3,391 bcf), respectively.
